Men's sexual health covers desire, erections, ejaculation and satisfaction, and each shifts with age, stress and health. ED often has physical causes such as blood vessel disease, high blood pressure or diabetes, and it can be an early warning of heart disease. Proven treatments come from a doctor. Herbal supplements are not ED treatments.
What does healthy sexual function look like for men?
Healthy sexual function is less about a number and more about your own baseline. It covers desire, the ability to get and keep an erection, ejaculation, and how satisfied you and a partner feel.
All four shift with age, sleep, stress and health. A brief rough patch is common. A change that lasts for weeks, or keeps coming back, is worth a doctor visit.
Desire
Rises and falls with stress, mood, sleep and hormones.
Erection
Needs healthy blood vessels, nerves and hormones.
Ejaculation
Timing varies between men and between occasions.
Satisfaction
How you and a partner feel overall.
What causes erectile dysfunction in men?
Erectile dysfunction usually has a physical cause, a mental one, or both at once. NIDDK lists hardened arteries, high blood pressure and diabetes among the health problems ED can point to (NIDDK, 2024).
The table groups common causes and who can help.
| Cause group | Common examples | Who to see first |
|---|---|---|
| Blood vessels | Hardened or narrowed arteries, high blood pressure, high cholesterol | Primary care doctor |
| Blood sugar | Diabetes, which can harm nerves and vessels | Primary care doctor |
| Nerves | Diabetes-related nerve damage, some surgeries, spine problems | Doctor or urologist |
| Hormones | Low testosterone, thyroid problems | Doctor, with blood tests |
| Medicines | Some blood pressure, mood and prostate medicines | The prescriber; never stop on your own |
| Habits | Smoking, heavy drinking, little movement, poor sleep | Doctor, plus your own changes |
| Mind and mood | Stress, anxiety, depression, relationship strain | Doctor or counselor |
Is ED an early sign of heart disease?
ED can be an early warning of heart and blood vessel disease. The American Urological Association tells doctors to explain this link and to consider a heart check (AUA, 2018).
The reason is plumbing. The arteries that supply the penis are small, so narrowing can show up there before it causes chest pain. In a study of 9,457 men aged 55 and older, those who developed ED had about a 25% higher risk of later heart events (Thompson et al., 2005).
Can blood pressure, diabetes or medicines affect erections?
Yes, all three can. High blood pressure and diabetes can damage the vessels and nerves that erections rely on, and MedlinePlus notes that ED can mean clogged vessels or nerve damage (MedlinePlus, 2025).
Some prescription medicines can also play a part, including some for blood pressure, mood and the prostate.
- Keep taking every prescribed medicine until your doctor says otherwise.
- Ask whether a different dose or drug is an option.
- Mention every supplement, since some can add to a medicine's effects.
Can stress and anxiety cause performance problems?
Stress and anxiety can cause real erection problems, even in men with healthy blood vessels. The body's stress response works against the relaxed state an erection needs.
One difficult night can start a loop of worry and more difficulty. Naming the pattern is often the first step out of it.

Habits that ease stress tend to help sexual health too. Regular movement, a steady sleep window and less alcohol are a sensible start.
If worry keeps coming back, a doctor can rule out physical causes and refer you to a counselor.
How do I talk to my doctor about ED?
Book a regular visit and raise ED in the first few minutes. Doctors discuss it every day, and MedlinePlus urges men to speak up even when it feels awkward (MedlinePlus, 2025).
These five steps make the visit shorter and more useful.
- 1
Write down what changed
Note when the problem started, how often it happens and whether morning erections still occur.
- 2
List every pill you take
Include prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines and every supplement, with the doses on each label.
- 3
Bring your numbers
Blood pressure, blood sugar or cholesterol results from earlier visits help your doctor see the whole picture.
- 4
Say it in one plain sentence
For example: I have had trouble getting or keeping an erection for three months.
- 5
Ask what comes next
Ask which tests make sense for you and whether your heart or blood vessels need a closer look.
What are the proven treatments for ED?
Proven ED treatments come from a doctor, not a supplement aisle. The AUA guideline sets out several options, including prescription pills, devices and procedures, and asks doctors to match the choice to the man (AUA, 2018).
Treating the cause also counts, such as better control of blood pressure and blood sugar.
| Option | Who offers it | Evidence base |
|---|---|---|
| Lifestyle changes | You, with your doctor's advice | Supports heart and vessel health |
| Prescription ED pills | A doctor, after checking your heart medicines | Tested in clinical trials |
| Devices and procedures | A urologist | Set out in the AUA guideline |
| Counseling | A counselor or therapist | Helps when stress or anxiety plays a part |
| Herbal sex supplements | Online sellers | No proven treatment effect |
Where does a supplement like Horsewood fit in men's sexual health?
A supplement like Horsewood is not a treatment for ED, low testosterone or a prostate problem. It sits outside the medical options above, and no study has tested the finished formula.
The Horsewood label prints every amount, and each is small. Tongkat ali is 10 mg of extract, while trials used 100 to 600 mg a day (Leisegang et al., 2022). Saw palmetto is 20 mg, one sixteenth of the 320 mg starting dose in a large trial (Andriole et al., 2013).

The bigger worry in this category is hidden drugs. FDA has found undeclared prescription drugs in many sexual-enhancement products sold as supplements (FDA, 2026). With nitrate heart medicine, those drugs can drop blood pressure dangerously (FDA, 2023).
No FDA tainted-product notice for Horsewood was found, and that absence is not proof of safety. The ingredients page compares each label line with research, and the label guide shows how to judge any bottle.
A four-week plan for men's sexual health
Habits tend to stick when you change one at a time. This plan sets a habit for each week, not a result to expect.
- Week 1
Book the check-up
Schedule a visit and start your list of medicines, supplements and symptoms.
- Week 2
Move every day
Add a daily walk or short workout. Ask your doctor first if you have heart trouble.
- Week 3
Protect your sleep
Keep the same bedtime and wake time, and cut back on late alcohol.
- Week 4
Talk it through
Share what you learned at the visit with your partner, and follow up on any tests.
Wondering whether a product fits you? The who it is for page lists who should ask a doctor first.

Men's sexual health: common questions
Common search questions, answered from the label and the sources cited on this page.
What is normal sexual health for men?
There is no single normal. Desire and erections vary with age, health and stress, so a lasting change from your own usual is what matters.
What causes erectile dysfunction?
ED usually has more than one cause. Blood vessel disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, nerve damage, some medicines and stress can all play a part (NIDDK, 2024).
Is ED a sign of heart disease?
It can be. In a large study of men 55 and older, those who developed ED had about a 25% higher risk of later heart and blood vessel events (Thompson et al., 2005).
How common is ED by age?
ED becomes more common as men get older, but it can occur at any adult age. Age alone is never a reason to skip a check-up.
What tests do doctors do for ED?
Most visits start with questions about your health, medicines and habits, plus a physical exam. Your doctor may then order blood tests chosen for you.
What are proven treatments for ED?
The American Urological Association guideline lists several medical options, from prescription pills to devices and procedures (AUA, 2018). A doctor helps you choose based on your health.
Can blood pressure medicine cause ED?
Some medicines, including some for blood pressure, can affect erections. Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own; ask your doctor whether a change makes sense.
How does diabetes affect erections?
Diabetes can damage the nerves and blood vessels that erections depend on (MedlinePlus, 2025). Good blood sugar control and regular check-ups matter for this reason.
Can anxiety cause performance problems?
Yes. Worry and stress can make erections harder to get or keep. A doctor or counselor can help break the cycle.
How do I talk to my doctor about ED?
Bring a list of your medicines and supplements, and say what changed in one plain sentence. Doctors hear this every day.
